EES Small Grants Program

Guidelines

February 19, 2007

Description: The Bren/Econ EES training program has a small amount of money to be distributed as mini-grants to PhD students advised by Bren or Economics ladder faculty.  Grants are awarded on a competitive basis.  Selection criteria include:  need (absence of other funding sources), relevance to the EES mission, positive externalities extending beyond recipient(s), and likelihood of success for the project.  The basic philosophy is to use these small grants to seed other activities or facilitate collaborations.  Typically, the subject matter would be in one of the following: (a) environmental economics, (b) activities spanning natural science and economics, or (c) natural science with clear connection to environmental economics.  However, the aim of this program is flexibility – EES would like to encourage innovative activities and thus places few constraints on the specific activities that may be funded.   Refer to www.ees.ucsb.edu for more information on the program and its mission.

Eligibility:  All PhD students at UCSB whose principal advisor is a ladder faculty member in the Department of Economics or the Bren School of Environmental Science & Management.

Examples of Activities: Data collection/acquisition, hosting workshop or guest, interdisciplinary speaker series, field activities.
